Some of us are meant to be in this world to help those around us. We're devoted to being a problem solvers and a beacon of hope for our families and friends. I hope to inspire my children to be selfless and helpful in the moments when no one is watching. The thing I have learned about having such a strong desire to help others, is that you need to establish a healthy balance. You cannot give from an empty well. Did you get that? You cannot give positive energy or sound advice if you are not in a healthy place yourself. That is why self care is so important. Not only are we taking care of our own mind, body and spirit, We are replenishing the well after giving some of that TLC to someone else who needs it in that moment. We are the most helpful when we are the best version of ourselves.
We need to be aware of our ability to deplete our own resources in the name of being selfless. The saying is true that everything good should be taken or given within limits. If we exhaust our own mental resources or physical resources by spreading ourselves thin, when a situation comes up where we're needed, we may be unable to find the mental or physical capacity to give it our undivided attention.
If you want to be able to help the people around you, and I mean truly help them, you have to take care of yourself first and wholeheartedly.
